Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300)

A temporary fiancé(e) pathway for eligible applicants who intend to marry in Australia.

Subclass 300 is designed for an eligible prospective spouse who is outside Australia and intends to marry their Australian partner after visa grant. The visa does not itself grant permanent residence; the usual next step after marriage is an onshore Partner visa application within the visa period.

Who this pathway is generally for

  • The applicant is outside Australia when applying.
  • The parties intend to marry and meet the relevant relationship requirements.
  • The prospective spouse is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

How the process usually works

  1. Show the genuine intention to marry and the history of the relationship.
  2. Prepare evidence of having met in person and of the relationship continuing.
  3. After grant, marry within the permitted period.
  4. Consider the timing and requirements for the subsequent Partner visa application.

Issues that commonly need closer analysis

  • wedding timing and travel
  • relationship evidence before marriage
  • changes in circumstances after grant
  • health, character or prior visa history

Why the details matter

Visa criteria often operate together with application-validity rules, location requirements, previous immigration history and evidence requirements. Two people applying for the same subclass can therefore face very different legal and evidentiary issues.
