The points-tested subclass 189 pathway involves skills assessment, SkillSelect Expression of Interest (EOI), invitation and then the visa application. Meeting the minimum points threshold does not itself guarantee an invitation.
Who this pathway is generally for
- You have an eligible skilled occupation and a suitable skills assessment.
- You meet the age, English and points requirements at the relevant time.
- You receive an invitation through SkillSelect before lodging the visa application.
How the process usually works
- Obtain the correct skills assessment for the nominated occupation.
- Calculate and evidence points claims before submitting the EOI.
- Keep the EOI current and wait for an invitation.
- After invitation, lodge the visa within the invitation period and prove every claimed point.
Issues that commonly need closer analysis
- overclaiming skilled employment or qualification points
- skills assessment expiry or incorrect occupation selection
- partner points and English evidence
- changes between EOI and invitation
- section 48 or visa-status issues for onshore applicants
Why the details matter
Visa criteria often operate together with application-validity rules, location requirements, previous immigration history and evidence requirements. Two people applying for the same subclass can therefore face very different legal and evidentiary issues.
