Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

A permanent points-tested visa requiring nomination by an Australian state or territory.

Subclass 190 combines federal visa criteria with state or territory nomination requirements. The nomination stage and the visa stage are separate, and each jurisdiction may apply its own priorities and evidentiary rules.

Who this pathway is generally for

  • You have an occupation eligible for the relevant nomination program.
  • You have a suitable skills assessment and meet the points-tested visa requirements.
  • A state or territory nominates you and you receive an invitation to apply.

How the process usually works

  1. Assess occupation eligibility and the requirements of the relevant state or territory.
  2. Prepare the SkillSelect EOI and any state nomination application or registration of interest.
  3. Receive nomination and invitation.
  4. Lodge the subclass 190 visa and substantiate points and eligibility claims.

Issues that commonly need closer analysis

  • state-specific residence or employment requirements
  • occupation availability changing between program years
  • points claims that cannot be evidenced
  • commitment to the nominating jurisdiction
  • timing of skills assessment and English results

Why the details matter

Visa criteria often operate together with application-validity rules, location requirements, previous immigration history and evidence requirements. Two people applying for the same subclass can therefore face very different legal and evidentiary issues.
