Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

A five-year provisional visa for invited skilled applicants nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by an eligible relative.

Subclass 491 is a points-tested regional visa. It can be based on state or territory nomination or eligible family sponsorship and carries regional residence and work expectations. Eligible holders may later consider a permanent residence pathway.

Who this pathway is generally for

  • You have an eligible occupation and a suitable skills assessment.
  • You are nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by an eligible relative in a designated regional area.
  • You receive an invitation and satisfy the points test.

How the process usually works

  1. Identify the relevant nomination or family-sponsored pathway.
  2. Prepare an EOI and any state or territory application.
  3. Receive nomination or sponsorship support and invitation.
  4. Lodge the visa application and comply with regional conditions after grant.

Issues that commonly need closer analysis

  • different state nomination pathways
  • regional location rules
  • family sponsor eligibility
  • changes in employment after grant
  • points and skills-assessment evidence

Why the details matter

Visa criteria often operate together with application-validity rules, location requirements, previous immigration history and evidence requirements. Two people applying for the same subclass can therefore face very different legal and evidentiary issues.
