Training Visa (Subclass 407)

A temporary visa for structured workplace-based occupational training or professional development.

Subclass 407 is for genuine training rather than filling ordinary workforce shortages. Under the current process, the sponsor and nomination generally need to be approved before the visa application is made, unless a specific government-agency arrangement applies.

Who this pathway is generally for

  • There is an approved temporary activities sponsor or relevant government sponsor.
  • The training fits one of the recognised occupational training types.
  • The applicant has the background needed to benefit from the proposed training program.

How the process usually works

  1. Confirm the training purpose and sponsorship framework.
  2. Prepare sponsorship and nomination material, including a structured training plan.
  3. After approval of the required sponsor/nomination stages, lodge the visa application.
  4. Keep training activities consistent with the approved program.

Issues that commonly need closer analysis

  • training plan is too similar to ordinary employment
  • wrong occupational training category
  • changing sponsor or training program
  • insufficient evidence of genuine skill development

Why the details matter

Visa criteria often operate together with application-validity rules, location requirements, previous immigration history and evidence requirements. Two people applying for the same subclass can therefore face very different legal and evidentiary issues.
