National Innovation Visa

Advice on the invitation-only National Innovation visa (subclass 858) for exceptionally talented applicants.

The National Innovation visa is not a conventional points-tested skilled visa. It is an invitation-only permanent pathway for established and emerging leaders with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement who can make significant contributions to Australia.

Who the program is designed for

Home Affairs identifies high-calibre talent including global researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative investors, athletes and creatives. The central question is not simply whether an applicant is successful in their field, but whether the record of achievement and potential contribution meets the very high threshold of the program.

How the pathway works

Step 1

Expression of Interest

An EOI is submitted for consideration. It remains active for the period specified by Home Affairs, but an EOI does not guarantee an invitation.

Step 2

Invitation

Only invited applicants can lodge a National Innovation visa application. Home Affairs issues invitations according to program priorities.

Step 3

Visa application and nomination

An invited applicant must lodge within the invitation period and provide a qualifying nomination together with evidence supporting the claimed achievements.

Evidence strategy

  • international recognition and objective indicators of achievement
  • leadership, research, commercial or creative impact
  • awards, publications, patents, investment or industry evidence as relevant
  • the applicant’s future contribution to Australia
  • the standing and suitability of the nominator
  • consistency between EOI claims and the visa application
